African Children’s Fund appeal for flood-damaged school kitchens
In April and May 2024, parts of Kenya experienced significant flooding, including the areas around Thika and Kiambu County where the schools our charity partner, African Children's Fund, supports are located.
Following an extensive clean-up operation and review, two school kitchens have been identified as requiring urgent repairs: at Kiama and Muthuri Primary Schools.
Both schools run large daily Porridge Clubs to enable 600 children living in food poverty to attend school every day. 350 children receive a daily mug of porridge at Kiama with 250 doing the same at Muthuri.
Until the school kitchens are repaired, porridge meals will be cooked outside.
This is a slow, inefficient process which means children can miss lessons if their porridge isn't ready during break time; it is affected by weather; it provides inadequate working conditions for school cooks and it exacerbates the risks of cooking over open fires.
Please donate whatever you can afford on African Children’s Fund’s dedicated fundraising page so their Kenyan partner, Watoto Kwanza, can arrange the repair of the school kitchens as quickly as possible, ensuring 600 children continue to receive their vital mug of daily porridge that enables them to go to school, rather than working, scavenging or begging on the streets.
Thank you in advance for your kindness.
